5 Early Warning Signs of Cancer You Should Never Ignore

Many cancers are highly treatable when caught early — but the warning signs are often subtle and easy to dismiss. Here are five symptoms that deserve a doctor's attention, not a "wait and see" approach.

Cancer is easier to treat — and more likely to be cured — when it's caught in its earliest stages. Unfortunately, many early symptoms are mild, easy to brush off, or mistaken for something else entirely. Here are five signs that are always worth a conversation with your doctor.

1. Unexplained weight loss

Losing a noticeable amount of weight without changes to diet or exercise can be an early sign of cancers of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, or lungs. If you've lost more than 5% of your body weight without trying, it's worth getting checked.

2. Persistent fatigue

Everyone feels tired sometimes, but fatigue that doesn't improve with rest and interferes with daily life — can be an early symptom of leukemia, colon cancer, or stomach cancer.

3. A lump or swelling that doesn't go away

Not every lump is cancer, but any new lump — in the breast, neck, testicles, or elsewhere — that persists for more than two weeks should be examined by a doctor.

4. Changes in bowel or bladder habits

Persistent constipation, diarrhea, blood in the stool, or changes in urination frequency can point to colorectal, bladder, or prostate cancer, especially when the change lasts more than a few weeks.

5. A sore that doesn't heal

Skin sores that don't heal within a few weeks — or mouth ulcers that persist — can sometimes be an early sign of skin or oral cancers, particularly in people who smoke or use tobacco.

None of these symptoms automatically means cancer — most of the time, they have far more common, less serious causes. But persistent or unusual changes in your body are always worth discussing with a doctor. Early evaluation costs very little; delayed diagnosis can cost a great deal.
